Get Moving to Ease Anxiety and Depression
Life sometimes gets you down or leaves you anxious. Lift yourself up with a workout. Researchers recruited 119 adults ages 20 to 45 without diabetes or other medical conditions who did not exercise. A mood rating questionnaire confirmed they did not have depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues. Randomly divided into two groups, half the participants followed their regular routine, while the others hit the treadmill or stationary bike four times a week for a vigorous, 60-minute workout, including warm-up and cooldown. After three months, everyone then took the mood survey again. The exercisers’ depression scores, already low, dropped 35 percent. The others’ scores went up a bit. The lesson: Exercise several times a week to improve your mood.
