Move your body and you might benefit your brain. German researchers tracked 2,013 adults ages 21 to 84 over the course of about 15 years. They measured participants’ exercise capacity and, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), analyzed their brains. Taking into account the participants’ age, education, and overall health, the researchers found that the fittest participants also had the highest brain volume in regions of the brain that are linked to cognitive health. Whether exercise leads directly to improved brain health remains an open question, but this study provides more evidence of the benefits of staying fit.
