Fasting for 14 Hours May Offer Longterm Health Benefits
People at risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke might improve their health by fasting for 14 hours every day. That’s according to a study of 19 people who had at least three of these heart disease risk factors: high fasting blood glucose, high blood pressure, high triglycerides (a type of blood fat), low HDL (“good”) cholesterol, and excess abdominal fat. Participants were told to eat what they wanted, but only during a 10-hour window of the day (fasting began between 6 and 8 p.m.). After three months, they had lost about 3 percent of their weight, had decreased their LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by 11 percent, and had lowered their blood glucose level by 5 percent. Most reported sleeping better and having more energy. Researchers are now conducting a larger trial to investigate these preliminary findings.
