Seniors Can Still Build Muscle
Are you over 60 and mostly inactive? You can still build muscle strength with exercise. In a study, 15 adults ages 60 to 80 performed six sets of 10 repetitions of a leg extension exercise. Seven of the adults had been exercising regularly for at least the past 20 years, whereas the other eight had not been particularly active. By having them swallow a liquid tracer, researchers were able to monitor the proteins in their muscles. Surprisingly, muscle-building in response to the exercise was similar between the groups, suggesting that it’s never too late to benefit from exercise. But talk with your doctor before starting an exercise regimen.
