Are You Prepared for Emergencies?
Natural disasters and other emergencies can pose particular dangers for older adults with chronic conditions, including diabetes. In a nationwide survey of 2,256 adults ages 50 to 80, nearly three-quarters reported experiencing emergency situations (such as severe weather or a power outage lasting more than a day) at least once in their lives. Yet only about half of them had a seven-day supply of food and water and/or alternative power supplies on hand. Of those requiring medication, 18 percent didn’t have a seven-day supply stocked. Only 44 percent of participants said they had signed up to receive local emergency alerts (more information at ready.gov/alerts).
