Overweight Men Get Teased, Too

By Matt McMillen , ,

Like women, overweight men bear the burden of weight-related stigma, and their physical and emotional health often suffers as a result. Researchers surveyed 1,753 adult men about a variety of health topics. Most were overweight or obese, and about a quarter had diabetes or prediabetes. More than 40 percent reported weight stigma, including teasing, discrimination, and unfair treatment. Depression and binge eating were common, and many of the men felt shame and saw themselves as unattractive and unhealthy. If you have negative feelings about being overweight or obese, counter them with healthy habits that you can be proud of and, the researchers suggest, pay less attention to the number on your scale.
