Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain

The upcoming holiday season offers abundant opportunities to overeat and put on pounds, but a recent study provides a simple strategy to help prevent that. Researchers randomly divided 111 adults without diabetes into two groups for a study period that began just before Thanksgiving and ended shortly after New Year’s Day. Participants in one group were told to weigh themselves daily and to maintain their starting weight, which they did; some even lost weight. The other group, however, received no special instructions, and they gained an average of more than 6 pounds. Weigh yourself every day to keep tabs on how you’re doing and to nudge yourself to adjust your eating habits if the number starts to creep up.
