Many Teens Report Harmful Eating Behaviors
In a survey of 178 teens with type 1, 41 percent reported at least one harmful behavior, such as binge eating, restricting food, purging, using laxatives, or cutting insulin doses to avoid weight gain. Teens who reported these behaviors were more likely to be overweight or obese females. They also tended to monitor their glucose levels less often, have less–than–ideal glucose management, suffer from depression, and report more family conflict around diabetes. If you’re a teen who struggles with eating—or know one—ask a diabetes health care provider for help.
