Need to lose weight? Your smartphone could help. Researchers conducted a yearlong randomized, controlled trial with 351 obese middle-aged adults, nearly 40 percent of whom had type 2 diabetes. Half tracked their weight via an app designed by the researchers, which sent daily interactive text messages about goals such as avoiding soda and fast food. They also had regular coaching calls with a registered dietitian. After six months, app users were seven times more likely to have lost at least 5 percent of their weight, compared with the other participants, who received only weight-loss pamphlets and advice from their doctors. Download the free app, called Charge, for your Apple or Android device and try it for yourself. There are other apps that offer similar features, so shop around for the one that works best for you.
