Exercising With Friends Extends Life Span
Play sports with friends—you’ll live longer. Researchers examined about 25 years’ worth of health records for 8,577 adults in Denmark (about 3 percent had diabetes). The records included details about their exercise habits. After accounting for differences in education, age, occupation, and income, they found that tennis players lived nearly 10 years longer than people who didn’t exercise; soccer and badminton players lived about five and six years more, respectively. Those who did solo sports such as cycling, swimming, and jogging outlived non-exercisers by two to three years. The takeaway: Any exercise is better than none, but activities that have a social aspect appear to offer additional health benefits.
