Don't Take Heart Health for Granted
No matter how much you exercise, don’t take your heart health for granted. Canadian researchers evaluated the cardiovascular health of 798 adults ages 35 and older. None of the participants had been diagnosed previously with cardiovascular disease, and all had been active athletes for many years: They biked, ran, played sports, or did other moderate to vigorous exercise for an average of nearly eight hours a week. Medical exams revealed that 11 percent of the participants had some form of cardiovascular disease, and, alarmingly, most of those diagnosed had none of the classic symptoms, such as chest pain or shortness of breath. If you have cardiovascular disease risk factors, including diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of heart attack, be sure to discuss your heart health with your doctor regularly, even if you work out and feel fine.
