Gestational Diabetes Increases Type 2 Risk for Moms and Obesity Risk for Children
Women who are diagnosed with diabetes during pregnancy, a condition called gestational diabetes, are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes later in life, and their children are more likely to be obese. Researchers examined 4,697 mothers and 4,832 of their children about 11 years after birth. Of the women with gestational diabetes, 52 percent developed either prediabetes or type 2 diabetes during the study period, compared with just 20 percent of the mothers without gestational diabetes. Among their children, 19 percent of the kids whose mothers had gestational diabetes during pregnancy were obese, compared with just 10 percent of those whose mothers did not. The good news is that both type 2 diabetes and obesity are preventable with healthful eating and activity, so ask your and your child’s health care provider for tips.
