Bariatric Surgery Reduces Diabetes Complications Risk
If you’re very obese, weight-loss surgery, which research has shown can lead to remission of type 2 diabetes, may help you reduce your risk of serious diabetes complications. Researchers compared 4,024 obese adults with type 2 diabetes who had undergone bariatric surgery with 11,059 similar adults who did not have surgery. After five years, those who had undergone surgery had a 63 percent lower risk of nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy) than those who had not. Their risk of kidney damage was 59 percent lower, and their risk for the eye disease diabetic retinopathy was 45 percent lower. Talk to your doctor to learn whether you might be a candidate for and benefit from weight-loss surgery.
