Probiotics Are Good for Bone Health
There’s been a lot of talk recently about the health benefits of “good bacteria,” also called “probiotics,” particularly with regard to gut health. Probiotics are found in fermented foods such as yogurt and in supplement form. Now researchers have identified a possible new benefit: bone health. In a study, 70 older women with low bone density were randomly given either a daily probiotic supplement containing Lactobacillus reuteri or a placebo. After one year, the amount of further bone loss was cut in half among those who took the probiotic. Lactobacillus reuteri is available under different brand names. Of course, probiotics aren’t substitutes for any current medications you may be taking. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions.
