Home delivery of meals may help keep older adults out of the hospital. Researchers studied more than 3,000 men and women who were eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid, a group of people who often don’t have access to nutritious foods. Participants were divided into three groups: those who received home-delivered meals specifically tailored to meet medical needs, those who received non-tailored meals, and those who didn’t receive home meal delivery. Over about two years, participants enrolled in any type of meal delivery had fewer emergency department visits than those who didn’t get meals delivered. People who got medically tailored meals also had 52 percent fewer hospital admissions.
