The Benefits of Having a Primary Care Provider
Having a regular doctor may be good for your health. That may seem obvious, but a study of Medicare beneficiaries (age 65 and older) revealed that about 5 percent—or more than 2 million Americans—didn’t have a regular physician. What’s more, the proportion was higher among men and among people of racial or ethnic minority groups, including the 18 percent of people who responded to the survey in Spanish. Older adults without regular doctors reported worse experiences when they did seek medical care, as well as more trouble obtaining needed care and medications quickly. If you don’t have a primary care provider, now is a good time to find one.
