Supportive Relationships Help in Keeping Weight Down

Maintain a supportive relationship and you’ll be more likely to keep your weight in check. Harvard researchers asked 2,650 adults of all ages who were married or had a long-term partner to rate the relationship’s overall quality and the level of support and care they got from their significant other. Over 10 years, those who gave their partnerships top marks and rated their mates most supportive gained several fewer pounds than those who judged theirs least favorably. Providing encouragement appears particularly important: Participants who felt the most support were the least likely to be obese. Both men and women benefited equally from their relationships.
