Add Spices to Lower Your Salt Intake
Here’s a neat trick for trimming the salt from your diet: Add some spice. In a study of 606 Chinese adults, those who preferred spicy foods tended to eat less salt, while those who preferred salt stuck with less-spicy fare. The spice lovers had lower systolic (top number) blood pressure—118 mmHg for the top third of spice lovers compared with 126 mmHg for those in the bottom third. So, what accounts for the association? Researchers have a guess: Brain imaging done while the study participants ate showed that the areas stimulated by salt and spice overlapped, suggesting that consuming spice reduced the craving for salt. The American Diabetes Association recommends no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day. There are no restrictions regarding red pepper flakes, though!
