Relief for Achy Knees

Millions of Americans have osteoarthritis, which causes the cartilage in joints such as the knee to deteriorate. Weight loss, however, could slow the disease. Researchers followed 640 overweight or obese people who had mild or moderate osteoarthritis in their right knees. Their average age was 63. After four years, MRI scans showed that participants whose medical records indicated a weight loss of more than 10 percent maintained the healthiest knees. Losing 5 to 10 percent of their body weight also provided benefits. Those who did not lose weight had 2.3 times more knee cartilage deterioration by the study’s end. Weight loss, this study suggests, helps take damaging pressure off your knees.
