Losing Weight Gives the Brain a Boost
Lose weight to protect your brain. Some studies suggest that type 2 diabetes harms the brain and boosts the risk of dementia, and excess weight appears to increase that effect. Researchers compared the brain scans and cognitive test results of 100 Korean adults with diabetes between ages 30 to 60. Half were overweight or obese, and half were normal weight. Both groups showed some deterioration in several brain regions, such as the temporal lobe. However, brain deterioration was significantly worse among overweight and obese participants, who also performed worse on tests that measured attention and brain processing speed. To keep your brain sharp, don’t delay needed weight loss once you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes.
