Type 2 Drug Benefits the Heart Too

By Miriam E. Tucker , , ,

If you use empagliflozin (Jardiance) to treat type 2 diabetes and you also have heart disease, here’s some good news: In addition to lowering your glucose levels, the drug could also prolong your life. Researchers studied over 7,000 people with type 2 diabetes and heart disease who were taking metformin, blood pressure drugs, statins for cholesterol, and baby aspirin to prevent blood clots. Over a three-year period, adding empagliflozin reduced the incidence of death from heart disease (but, interestingly, not from heart attack or stroke) by about one-third compared with a placebo. Now, the Food and Drug Administration has OK’d the new findings to appear on the drug’s label, giving doctors more reason to consider prescribing it.
