Statins Might Reduce Alzheimer's Risk
Cholesterol-lowering statins might also reduce your risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers who analyzed the Medicare records of nearly 400,000 beneficiaries found that the Alzheimer’s risk was 15 percent lower for women and 12 percent lower for men who used statins daily, compared with those who used them less often or started them later in the five-year study period. When researchers focused on race, they learned that African American women who used statins daily benefitted from a reduced Alzheimer’s rate—but African American men did not. There were also differences between various types of statins: Some medications lowered the risk in all races, while others had that effect only in white women.
