Victoza May Reduce Heart Disease Risk

By Miriam E. Tucker , , ,

Good news for people with type 2 diabetes, who are at high risk for heart disease: The injectable drug liraglutide (Victoza) has been shown to reduce cardiovascular disease risk in addition to lowering blood glucose. In a study, 9,340 people with type 2 diabetes who were at high risk for heart disease were given either liraglutide or a placebo for five years. Those receiving liraglutide were 13 percent less likely to experience heart attack, stroke, or death from any heart-related cause. This is important because heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in people with diabetes.
