Type 2 Drug Linked to Weight Loss and Better Blood Glucose in Type 1 Diabetes

By Miriam E. Tucker , , ,

The drug liraglutide (Victoza) is becoming popular for treating type 2 diabetes, in large part because it helps with weight loss as well as blood glucose control. Now research suggests the injectable medication might also help people with type 1 diabetes, many of whom also struggle with their weight. In two studies, adding daily liraglutide to insulin treatment improved glucose control and produced about a 10-pound weight loss in people with type 1 diabetes who started out with A1C levels above 7 percent. The downside: Liraglutide is injection only and has been linked to side effects such as stomach upset and very rare cases of pancreatitis. Bottom line: If you’re interested in trying liraglutide, consult with your doctor.
