Beet Juice Improves Blood Flow
Looking for a heart-healthy drink? Try beetroot juice, which naturally contains nitrate, a chemical that improves blood flow and reduces blood pressure. Researchers randomly assigned 67 adults to 8 ounces daily of either natural beetroot juice or the same juice with the nitrates removed. After six weeks, those who drank the natural beetroot juice had a 24 percent increase in a measure of blood flow, while the others experienced a small decrease. The juice also improved some other measures of heart function, increased levels of “good” gut bacteria, and caused no ill effects. Of course, it’s important to account for carbohydrate grams (the juices each had 24 per cup) if you have diabetes.
