When Diabetes Education Matters Most
When and how often should people with type 2 diabetes receive self-management education and support? For the first time, there are guidelines. According to the American Diabetes Association, the American Association of Diabetes Educators, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the key times for diabetes education and support are at diagnosis, annually, when complicating factors such as new health conditions arise, and when there are transitions in care, such as from pediatric to adult providers. Information and support may differ at the various times, such as a focus on urgent safety concerns at diagnosis and ongoing management and troubleshooting at annual visits.
