Let Your Doctor Pick Your Diet

If you want to lose weight, ask your doctor to pick your diet. Researchers assigned 105 obese adults (mostly men) to either a low-carb or a low-fat diet, while allowing another 102 to choose between the two. After 48 weeks, those who weren’t given a choice lost more weight—about 15 pounds, compared with 12.5 pounds for those who picked their own diet. Researchers aren’t sure why, but they think perhaps giving a choice results in people eating more of the foods they like. Another theory: People simply better stick to a diet when told what to do.
