Diabetes Stats:

Diagnosed with prediabetes in 2011, which she managed at first with weight loss and dietary changes; started on metformin in 2012.

She Says:

“I check my blood glucose levels twice a day, try to walk at least a half hour a day, and when I am craving sweets, I reach for a piece of fruit or some celery, carrot sticks, or other veggies.

Step Out Experience:

Van Bladel is captain of her company team, Team Anixter, which has raised over $20,000 in the past two years (with a little help from the company’s matching gift program). “I am very proud of all people who jump on board to raise awareness and help find a cure.”

Van Bladel’s dear friend, Renee, passed away at the age of 38 from complications brought on by diabetes. “I walk in her memory, and to help her educate others about the dangers of this disease. I want to do what I can to help find a cure, and Step Out is a great way to raise the awareness. Since I have started walking, I have met so many wonderful people. There is a great support group through the ADA for anyone trying to understand the disease and how to take care of themselves.”
