Back to the Future

Happy birthday, American Diabetes Association

By Kelly Rawlings, Editorial Director , ,

You may have heard that the American Diabetes Association is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Our diabetes community typically faces forward—looking to the future with great hope.

This anniversary year gives us an opportunity to look back and marvel at how far we’ve come. Visit the timeline at diabetes.org/75years to see important milestones. One of my favorites: when meters replaced those stinky, color-changing Clinitest urine glucose testing tablets.

One thing that’s a constant is how much passion, concern, and care our community shows every day. The wonderful people I’ve met because diabetes has brought us together are among the blessings I most treasure.

For you, I have five more friends—the Red Striders who walk through these pages and encourage you to become part of Step Out®: Walk to Stop Diabetes®, the Association’s annual fund-raising walk to accelerate research, education, and awareness. According to Red Strider Caryn Cross Hawk, “It’s a positive experience that reinforces the fact and feeling that we are not alone in this fight!” Exactly.

I hope you’ll join Caryn and the rest of us by signing up for your local walk event. If you have diabetes, you’re a Red Strider. Make strides now at diabetes.org/redstriders.
