Buffet Ahead: Reduce Your Speed

Tackling healthy foods first at a buffet may help you make smart choices for your plate, a study found. Researchers set up two breakfast buffets at a conference, one with foods presented in order of healthy to unhealthy (fruit, low-fat yogurt, low-fat granola, cinnamon rolls, bacon, potatoes, and cheesy eggs) and the other with the dishes placed in the reverse order. In both cases, the first three foods people encountered ended up making up two-thirds of their plates. Plus, those who started with cheesy eggs tended to pile on their traditional sides—potatoes and bacon—while those who started with fruit selected other dishes more randomly, and more healthfully.
