Diabetes Forecast

Better Basics

By Kelly Rawlings, Editorial Director ,

This April issue of Diabetes Forecast has a “back to basics” theme. Whether you’re newly diagnosed with diabetes or, like me, have years of experience, focusing on the fundamentals is rewarding. This issue includes recommended medical tests and targets, tried-and-true carb-counting tips, and information on how to have a great diabetes visit with your primary care provider.

On days when diabetes seems especially demanding, it’s comforting to consider how basic health actions have more than one benefit. That 30-minute walk I took yesterday? It was good for my blood glucose, my blood pressure, and my cholesterol—a health trifecta!

I hope you’ll go to the cover story, and see the benefits that you give your entire body by taking care of your diabetes. I salute your efforts! Then use the list of lab tests and checkup essentials, as a handy reminder to take to your next doctor visit. Parents, a checklist with targets for kids is online at diabetesforecast.org/kidtargets.

Of course, these guidelines are general—a starting point or a refresher—for a great conversation about what’s healthy for you. See the tips and make your next primary care provider visit your best one yet.

Here’s to good health for all of us, head to toe.
