Quick Walk Breaks Improve Circulation
Sitting still for long periods of time can increase your risk for heart disease. But a study suggests that taking quick walking breaks can prevent the blood vessel damage that happens during long stretches of inactivity. Researchers studied 12 young men who were not obese but also not very physically fit. On one study day, the men sat for three hours straight without moving their legs. On another, they did the same except they walked on a treadmill at 2 miles per hour for five minutes every half hour. The ability of the men’s blood vessels to expand in response to blood flow, a boon to circulation and blood pressure, dropped during the three hours of sitting still but stayed normal with the short walks.
