Heavy and Healthy? No

overweight people in weight-loss exercise class

Is it possible to be overweight yet healthy? A study says no, at least not when it comes to developing diabetes. Researchers followed nearly 34,000 soldiers ages 25 and older, of whom 38 percent were overweight and 13 percent obese. Among participants who did not have metabolic risk factors that raise the risk for type 2—such as high blood pressure, high LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, or low HDL (“good”) cholesterol—those who were overweight were twice as likely to develop diabetes as their normal-weight peers. Obese participants had nearly four times the risk of developing type 2 during the six-year study.
