Which diet plan is best? Actually, low-fat, low-carb, and those that focus on smaller portion sizes are all pretty similar in terms of long-term weight loss. An analysis of 48 studies of weight loss plans involving 7,286 individuals revealed that after a year, people following all types of diets had lost an average of about 16 pounds. Low-carb diets tended to produce greater weight loss by the six-month mark, but participants gained a bit back after a year, so results between diet groups were similar. In most cases, behavioral support and exercise boosted weight loss results. Bottom line: The best diet is the one you can stick with.
