1/3 cup unseasoned rice vinegar
2 Tbsp. dark sesame oil
2 tsp. light soy sauce
1 tsp. freshly grated ginger
1 garlic clove, finely minced
1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
1 can (11 oz.) water- or juice-packed mandarin oranges, drained well
1 small avocado, cut into 1-inch cubes
4 cups torn romaine lettuce, washed and patted dry
1/4 cup toasted walnut pieces


  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the dressing ingredients.
  2. Add the oranges and avocados, and gently mix.
  3. Add the lettuce and toss to coat with the dressing. To serve, place the salad in a shallow bowl and top with the walnuts.
