For women of a certain age, here’s another reason to lose weight: It might diminish those pesky hot flashes that come with menopause. In a study of 40 overweight or obese women who experienced four or more hot flashes a day, those who were randomly assigned to a behavioral weight loss program lost an average of 19 pounds by the six-month mark while there was little change in those who were waitlisted for the program. Women in the weight loss group reported experiencing only 22 hot flashes over two weeks, versus 56 for the waitlisted group. The effect may relate to estrogen levels, which are higher in women with greater body fat.
