If you have type 2 diabetes, you’ve probably been told to exercise. But what type of exercise is best? Researchers analyzed 14 exercise studies involving 915 adults with type 2 diabetes. Aerobic exercise (such as walking and bike riding) was better at lowering A1C levels—a measure of blood glucose control for the past two to three months—than was resistance training (such as lifting weights). But a combination of both types of exercise was best, lowering A1C by 0.17 percentage points more than aerobic exercise alone and 0.62 percentage points more than resistance training alone. Combined exercise also appeared to work best at lowering LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and other blood fats associated with heart disease.
