Type 1 and Type 2 on the Rise in Children
Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are on the rise in children age 19 and younger, researchers found. Records from four U.S. regions and one health care plan showed that the prevalence of type 1 diabetes rose by 21 percent from 2001 to 2009, and type 2 increased by 30 percent during that time. Type 1 is seen more often among white youth and type 2 among African American, Latino, and Native American youth. Researchers don’t know why diabetes is rising in youth, although genes and obesity are known to play a role in type 2.
