A majority of Americans would support laws prohibiting discrimination against people who are obese. In a 2013 survey of 1,202 people, 79 percent said they would support a law that forbids employers from discriminating based on weight; 76 percent endorsed placing body weight in their states’ civil rights laws as a protected category along with race, religion, and sex; and 69 percent supported laws extending disability protection to people with obesity. Thus far, the state of Michigan and a few localities have enacted the first type of law.
