When Older Kids Talk, Young Ones Listen

Wanting to be more like those cool older kids may help chubby children lose weight. A Canadian study enlisted 9- to 12-year-olds at 19 schools to help teach 6- to 8-year-olds about healthy behaviors. Each week, teachers spent 45 minutes teaching the older kids about eating well, exercising, and feeling good about themselves. Later that week, the older students gave the younger students a 30-minute lesson about what they’d learned. Waist circumference shrank significantly among the 647 students in the buddy program, about half an inch on average. Children who were younger or heavier slimmed down the most.
