How to refrigerate and freeze foods to cut the risk of illness

Keep food safe for as long as possible by setting your refrigerator at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. Freezers should be kept at 0 degrees or below. How long should you store items before tossing? Refer to the chart below.

Egg salad, chicken salad, tuna
salad, and macaroni salad
3 to 5 days Do not freeze well
Unopened package of lunch meat 2 weeks 1 to 2 months
Opened package of lunch meat 3 to 5 days 1 to 2  months 
Bacon 7 days 1 month
Sausage 1 to 2 days 1 to 2 months
Ground meat 1 to 2 days  3 to 4 months
Steak 3 to 5 days 6 to 12 months
Pork or lamb chops  3 to 5 days  4 to 6 months
Roasts  3 to 5 days 4 to 12 months 
Whole chicken or turkey  1 to 2 days 1 year 
Pieces of chicken or turkey  1 to 2 days  9 months 
Soups and stews  3 to 4 days  2 to 3 months 
Cooked meat  3 to 4 days  2 to 6 months
