Metformin Might Cut Type 2 Risk in Kids
Beyond encouraging a healthy diet and physical activity, doctors don't have many options when it comes to helping their young obese patients lose weight and prevent type 2 diabetes. Metformin is among the safest blood glucose–lowering medications for adults, so researchers wanted to know whether it could help children at risk for developing type 2. In a study, obese children 8 to 18 years old took metformin twice daily for six months. By the end of the study, metformin users had lost more weight than children who had taken a placebo. The researchers also saw evidence that metformin improved blood glucose levels in the children, though it was unclear whether the benefits would last.
