Gestational Diabetes: Control Is Key
In an Australian study, the children of women with gestational diabetes had no more body fat at birth than those born to mothers without the condition. The authors attribute the similarity in baby size to the fact that 90 percent of the mothers with gestational diabetes had excellent blood glucose control. Uncontrolled gestational diabetes is generally associated with newborns who are too large, which is a risk to the health of both mother and child. This study suggests that good glucose control can cut that risk and that from healthy moms come healthy babies.
