Switch to Adult Care May Be Rocky
Children grow up and leave; that's what they do. But a study found that when kids with type 1 diabetes move from a pediatrician to an adult doctor, it can take a toll on their health. The study included 185 adolescents and young adults with type 1 who had been cared for by pediatric diabetes physicians at its start and were 18 years or older four years later. By then, about half of the young people had left their pediatricians. Researchers found that participants who'd switched from pediatric to adult care were 2 1/2 times as likely to have developed uncontrolled blood glucose levels as those who'd stuck with their pediatricians. The researchers plan to see what factors may ease the transition to adult diabetes care.
