Medicare Changes Rules on Supplies
The advocacy team at the American Diabetes Association has news about new Medicare regulations: Starting July 1, 2013, Medicare will cover diabetes testing supplies delivered to your home only if ordered from a Medicare mail-order contract supplier. These supplies include glucose test strips, lancets, lancet devices, batteries, and control solution. Suppliers are not allowed to influence you or give you an incentive to switch from your current testing supplies to a different brand. The new rules do not apply to Medicare Advantage plans.
Medicare will still cover your testing supplies if you buy them at a local Medicare-enrolled pharmacy or store, but be sure to ask if the store accepts “assignment,” or accepts the amount Medicare approves as payment in full. If it doesn’t, you may pay more. To find a Medicare supplier or for more information, including Medicare assistance programs in your state, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) or visit medicare.gov.
