A Diabetes Mom’s “Bling” Tote

When Laura Savelkoul’s son, Braden, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2011, she wanted to find a job that would allow her to be at home and available in case of an emergency. Now, the fruits of the business she started are sparkling in the American Diabetes Association's online store at shopdiabetes.org.

Savelkoul, 46, of Mohall, N.D., who embellishes clothing and accessories, has designed the Stop Diabetes® “bling bag.” “It was something that I wanted to do to hopefully make a difference for the American Diabetes Association and to take advantage of a bad situation in our own household,” Savelkoul says. All proceeds from sales of the bag will benefit the ADA.

Braden, 7, also is getting involved with the ADA, including taking part in Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes®. Savelkoul says the family is happy to be doing something that gives back.

Find the rhinestone-studded bags ($26.95) at shopdiabetes.org/rhinestone-tote.
