Winning Combo: Statins and Exercise
Both statins and exercise can improve cholesterol levels and health, but a study says a combination of the two treatments is best. Researchers analyzed the medical records of more than 10,000 veterans with high LDL (“bad”) cholesterol who had had an exercise test between 1986 and 2011. Those who took statins were 35 percent less likely to have died over the 10-year follow-up period than peers who weren’t on the cholesterol medication. But veterans who both took statins and exercised regularly fared best: They were 70 percent less likely to have died than those who didn’t take statins and exercised the least. And the more a person exercised, the lower the risk of dying prematurely.
