Veggie Snacks Please Kids

Next time your child asks for an after-school snack, skip the chips. Researchers randomly assigned 200 children in grades three through six to watch TV while eating as much as they wanted of potato chips, cheese, vegetables, or a combination of cheese and veggies. They measured how satisfied the kids were before, during, and after the television show. Kids who ate a combination of cheese and veggies ate 72 percent fewer calories than those who snacked on chips—but they were just as satisfied. The difference in calorie consumption between children who ate potato chips and the combo snack was even more pronounced among overweight and obese kids.
