Park the Car to Lose More Pounds
To shed pounds, keep the car in the garage. Researchers studied 26 years of data on how many miles Americans drove per year, their average daily calorie intake, and their body mass indexes (BMI, a ratio of weight to height). They found that driving 1 mile less per day correlated with a decrease in BMI equal to the decrease seen after cutting 100 calories daily. The study didn’t address the reason behind the link, but previous research has suggested that the additional exercise gained by walking or biking to work instead of driving can help people drop pounds.
