Weight Lifting Helps Type 1s Trim Up

Research news from the American Diabetes Association 72nd Scientific Sessions
June 8–12, 2012 | Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Habitual exercisers with type 1 diabetes who added resistance training to their cardio workouts gained strength and trimmed inches off their waistline in a 22-week study. The additional weight lifting failed to lower blood glucose levels or improve blood fat levels, however. This suggests that in type 1 diabetes, regular cardiovascular exercise may be enough, at least for controlling blood glucose and cholesterol.

Safety Note: Check with your health care provider before making big changes in your exercise plan, which could require adjustments in your meds, foods, or other treatment.
